Activating Empty Storefronts

What should be done with vacant lots and properties? While there's no simple answer, Social Innovation Fellow Sydney Gross explored this issue as a participant in RECOVER, the City of Edmonton's urban wellness initiative. In collaboration with the City, Arts Habitat, Edmonton Arts Council, Roundhouse, the Alberta Government, and community artists from the Indigenous Arts Movement and iHuman, Sydney created "Empty Storefront." The prototype, based out of Edmonton's Great Western Garment Building, featured a mural and arts and crafts. This session will provide you with an understanding of the climate surrounding empty storefronts, why they may be empty, how they may be filled and the barriers surrounding that. You can learn more about Recover, please visit www.edmonton.ca/urbanwellnessPresented by: Sydney Gross, Social Innovation FellowshipIn collaboration with the MacEwan University Social Innovation Institute, Roundhouse invites you to attend a full week of free workshops from September 23-27, designed to help you and your organization make a significant social impact.
